Names Section

Overview

The Names Section includes properties that are specific to names.

Including or Excluding Name Tags

Second Site processes every name tag for all the people included in the site. Non-primary names for people whose details are limited do not appear on the site.

Name tags are included in the person page entry

• if the name tag is primary, or
  
  
• if the tag type is included and the sentence for the tag does not begin with the exclusion marker and Database.Primary Tags Only is not checked.

Name tags are included in the name index

• if the name tag is primary, or
  
  
• if a name tag is one of the selected tags in the tag list in the Database section and Database.Primary Tags Only is not checked.

For selected name tags, the name tag is included in the narrative or in the grid unless the tag's sentence begins with the exclusion marker.

So, if a name tag's sentence is excluded via an exclusion marker, but the tag is included via the list of tags, the name will appear in the index even though the tag is not shown in the person page entry.

Properties

Show Primary Name Memo

The Show Primary Name Memo checkbox controls whether Second Site creates a footnote in the citation section to contain the memo, if any, associated with the primary name. The primary name is not displayed anywhere except at the start of the person page section, so there is no sentence or grid entry to display the memo. The default value is unchecked.

Pronoun Substitution

The Pronoun Substitution pulldown menu determines which pronoun substitution rule is used by Second Site. Second Site will only substitute a pronoun for the [P], [W], and [R:rolename] variables and when the name is the first text produced by a sentence.

The possible values are as follows.

None

Second Site will always use the full name of the subject.

Use Second Site Rule

Second Site will use the full name of the subject except when the previous name in the narrative is also the name of the subject.

Use TMG Rule

Second Site will use the appropriate pronoun for the subject except for the first reference to the subject's name.

Always Use Pronoun

Second Site will always use the appropriate pronoun for the subject. This is a good choice when using sentences for tag output in grid or columnar Formats (see Detail Format in the Body Tags Section.)

You may choose to think of it this way.

• None — no pronouns
• Use Second Site Rule — some pronouns
• Use TMG Rule — more pronouns
• Always Use Pronoun — even more pronouns

The default is Use Second Site Rule.

Subject Role Rule

The Subject Role Rule pulldown menu determines which subject role rule is used by Second Site.

The possible values are as follows.

All people with role (SS)

When processing a [Rx:rolename] variable for the role assigned to the subject (the person whose narrative is being written), Second Site will list all people who are assigned to the role.

Subject Only (TMG)

When processing a [Rx:rolename] variable for the role assigned to the subject (the person whose narrative is being written), Second Site will show the subject only.

The All people with role (SS) choice allows you to refer to all people assigned to a role, even in a sentence for one of those people. There is no easy way to get that output from TMG. The Subject Only (TMG) choice mimics TMG output, but prevents you from referring to all the people assigned to a role in the sentence for a person with the given role.

The default is Subject Only (TMG).

Name Link

The Name Link pulldown menu determines when names are converted to links in person page entries. This processing only applies to

1. sites where the Body Tags.Detail Format property is set to Use Sentence
2. names that are created by using one of the TMG variables such as [PO], [PAR] or one of the role variables [R:rolename], etc.

Names you enter as text in a memo are not recognized as names and are not formatted.

The possible values for Name Link are as follows.

First reference to person

Second Site will convert the first reference to a person into a link. Subsequent references will be formatted as names, but will not be links. This is the default value, but as described below this property only applies to Body Tags and when the Body Tags.Detail Format property is set to Use Sentence.

All references to person

Second Site will convert all references to a person into a link.

When the Body Tags.Detail Format property is set to Raw Data, Second Site follows the rule described under All references to person, above.

Surname Style Only

TMG supports 7 name subfields:

• Title
• Prefix
• Given
• PreSurname
• Surname
• Suffix
• Other

Second Site defines style properties for each name part in the Stylesheets.System.Names section.

If Surname Style Only is checked, which is the default, Second Site will include a <span class=...> HTML tag for the Surname, PreSurname, and Other parts of a name only. As a result, the style properties for the remaining name parts (Title, Prefix, Given, Suffix) will be ignored. That reduces the formatting possibilities for names, but also reduces the size of the generated HTML pages considerably. If you do not require text formatting for the Title, Prefix, Given, or Suffix, then you should select this option to reduce the size of your pages.

If Surname Style Only is unchecked, Second Site includes <span class=...> HTML tags for all name parts.

Ignore SortSurname and SortGiven

The Ignore SortSurname and SortGiven property affects how Second Site adds a name tag to the index.

If Ignore SortSurname and SortGiven is unchecked, which is the default, Second Site will compare the SortSurname and SortGiven fields to the Surname and Givenname fields. If they are different, then Second Site will add two entries to the name index: one built from the Surname and Givenname fields and one built from the SortSurname and SortGiven fields. If they are the same, then Second Site will add only one entry.

If Ignore SortSurname and SortGiven is checked, Second Site will add only one entry to the name index even if SortSurname and SortGiven are not the same as Surname and Givenname.

Show Surname Counts

The Show Surname Counts checkbox controls whether surname counts are included in the Surname Index. If checked, a number in parentheses will follow each surname in the index. The number represents the number of names in the index with the given surname. The default value is unchecked.
